Reaper Miniatures has some really nice bots called the XAIRobots that could work nicely as large alien bots for 15mm game play. I haven't seen these in person, but they look like they are on 25mm bases, so they probably stand 28mm-40mm tall.

Dark Realm Miniatures was kind enough to supply some really nice comparison pictures and descriptions of their miniature range.

Pax Arcadian tanks. These are all on top of a 25mm wide x 40mm long base so you get a better idea of size.

This is comparing transports. The transports are on top of 20mm wide by 30mm long bases.

I wanted to point out how large the Verger and Velite walkers are. TheVerger is on top of a 40mm wide x 20mm long base so it is at a similarbase height as the dreadnought. The dreadnought is on a 20mm x 20mmbase.

This shows the kraytonian tanks compared to each other. The Garatransport is not shown but it is on the same chassis as the Aurika. The3 tanks on the left are on 20mm wide x 30mm long bases. The Arkalest ison a 25mm wide x 40mm long base.

Michael from Angel Barracks has some rather cool 6mm creatures he just released for his new 6mm line. Angel Barracks also carries Plasma Blast Games figures and Dark Realm Miniatures.

Michael also has the FUBAR Sci-Fi ruleset. The rules consist of a one page document, which is fast playing and is designed for small unit actions in a modern or Sci-fi setting.

The rules are simple to learn (usually after about 15 minutes of play) yet have enough tactical complexity to give you a fun and challenging game.

DreamForge Games, Heavy Troopers

DreamForge Games has a bunch of previews of Mark's upcoming Heavy Troopers on the DreamForge Games Blog. As you can see there are some great heavy weapon options for these guys including the Grendel Siege Gun, Nova Cannon, Quad Mount, Light Anti-Tank Gun, and the H.E.L cannon (High Energy Laser).

The head swaps are a nice touch if you want your troopers to look the same as the lighter troops.

Here are some scale shots of the Solar Empire Marines (SEM) by Gerard Goyette of Canada, sculpted by Michael Lovejoy of England.

As you can see the aliens are quite big compared to the humans in either girth or height. The Calvary trooper is pretty sweet and the price is very reasonable at less than 50 cents per figure.

Solar Empire Marines

Just received a package of the Solar Empire Marines today from Gerard. The Solar Empire Marines (SEM) are a line of 6mm Sci-Fi designs conceived by Gerard Goyette of Canada sculpted by Michael Lovejoy of England.

The SEM figures are gorgeous and there are a ton of poses. If you are into 6mm gaming, these are going to be a must have. The small vehicles (truck, quad, hover car and jet bike) are really great looking.

The figures themselves, at least the ones I received were cast extremely well, with little to any flaws. The detail on the figures is superb. What if any flash that is on the figures can be easily removed. Most of the flash is really just excess metal that is on the tip of guns and bases. I haven't found any flash on the actual figures that would have to be filed down other than the bottom of the bases.

I have seen the SEM based 5 figures to a stand for infantry.

If the SEM stand at 6 feet, the Ga-Ule Felinoids Infantry (Aliens that look cat like) are about 7 to 8 feet tall. The Lizard looking aliens are roughly the same height as the humans, but are much bigger. The SEM power armored troopers would stand about 6'5" to 6'8" tall.

Khursan Miniatures, Earthdoom 15mm Aranid APC

Here's a render of Khurasan Miniatures Earthdoom 15mm Aranid APC. Looks very crab like.

It's a grav vehicle, and has a large door in the back shaped to the unique morphology of the Aranae. The hull (around 100mm long) will be used for both the APC and the Aranid main battle tank (MBT).

This model will initially be released in 15mm, then 10mm and possibly 28mm as well. I of course wouldn't mind seeing it in a 6mm version.

DreamForge Games, Sturmtruppen Squads

Mark over at DreamForge Games has a bunch of pictures up of the new Sturmtruppen Squads. I really like what I am seeing with these guys. The plan is to have both 15mm & 28mm available. The images below are 28mm figures.

These are multi-part metal minis. There are five standing/running leg poses and two kneeling leg poses. A total of seven weapons choices and the ability to choose what weapons to assemble with any leg set, as well as the ability to customize the pose by twisting the torso and heads.

For anyone who still plays Warzone, I am sure these would make great additions.

6mm Companies

Last night I got a little antsy and broke out a bunch of my 6mm Plasmablast Games figures. Along with those were sprinkled in some Ground Zero Games 2mm Germy's Micro Minis walkers, Steel Crown Productions - Exodus Wars Khazari Raiders and Dark Realm Miniatures Kraytonian Infantry.

Critical Mass Games and Rebel Minis also make some rather cool walkers that could be used in 6mm gaming.

Many gamers might not even realize that Ground Zero Games 2mm Germy's Micro Minis walkers look awesome in both 6mm and 15mm games.

Khurasan Miniatures has released a really cool set up sci-fi cars for 15mm gaming. These are perfect for any type of gaming scenario. The cars were designed by John Bear Ross (nice).

Gruntz Skirmish Rules

I haven't had a chance to play the Gruntz ruleset by Robin Fittons, but it looks pretty interesting.

Gruntz won the Tabletop Gaming News readers vote for best new Sci-Fi rules in 2011. Here is a little video going over shooting basics.

There is a great little writeup talking with Robin about Gruntz in Ancible Magazine.

Robin has also designed a great walker that is now carried by Critial Mass Games called the The Imperator Mecha. The Mecha is resin and retails for £20.00.

Once assembled the GRUNTZ Imperator Mecha stands at just over 3" tall.

Girlfriends and Gaming

I have been dating a pretty amazing woman named Kathleen for a few months now and she suggested we go to the gaming store for our 2nd month Anniversary, which happens to be tomorrow (the 8th). Is this a setup? We have never gone there together. In fact she doesn't game and quite frankly I haven't gamed since meeting her. OK so maybe I did get her to play a game of Castle Panic and a game of Neuroshima Hex, but that is as far as our gaming has gone. No miniature gaming at all.

Kathleen is a Pilates instructor and a massage therapist and is pretty much the furthest thing to a gamer that you could imagine. It is sort of funny to me that she suggested going gaming for our two month Anniversary. I think I might have hit the jackpot. :-)

I know there are a ton of gamers out there that have girlfriends or wives who game. The question is, were they gamers from the get go or did you program them to game? :-) Also has anyone been able to reduce there lead pile by putting their significant others to work painting figures? How was this accomplished? Lastly if your significant other did get into gaming, is there anything I need to know. Stuff like watch out for that fat guy in the corner who will certainly hit on her or don't let her get too involved in D&D, because she will leave you for the Dungeon Master. :-)

Rebel Minis new Viper Suit looks pretty slick. Designed by John Bear Ross and painted up by Jeff Racel. I definitely need to pick a few of these up.

There are 3 weapon versions in the first release of Vipers. MK.I-Mk. III. Also, for each version, there are 2 poses Standing and Advancing.

The models are entirely composed in resin... Bodies, sprues, everything and retail for $6.49 vs around $11 if it had been metal.

I usually like walkers and tanks that are a mix of metal and resin. I have a habit of breaking off resin guns, so getting them in metal usually helps solve this problem.

Dreamforge Games, Eisenkern Heavy Trooper

Here are some upcoming units from Dreamforge Games called the Eisenkern Heavy Troopers. I really like the look of these. Kind of remind me of GW's Grey Knights, but with more fire power. I could see these guys slowly walking down some city scape blasting away at stuff. These are slated for 32mm scale, but could be used in 28mm/32mm games.

I also like how the uniforms/armor tie in with the Sturmtruppen soldiers. Hopefully Mark will make an even heavier unit that is Terminator size or maybe a little bigger.

Here are some rather cool figures on Shapeways called the Frogan. They are designed by admiralducksauce's designs I would love to see these in metal. A pack of 4 is $9.99 which is rather expensive for 15s, but they are cool. I would love to see these compared to some other 15s to get a feeling for their size. This guy has some nice talent. He also has some pretty cool spaceships in his store.

Khurasan Miniatures, Stikks Skuttler

Here is a totally wacky vehicle from Khurasan Miniatures called the Skuttler. It is designed to be both a troop transport and armored fighting vehicle. Each segment is designed to hold up to 3 soldiers.

The Vehicle was designed by John Bear Ross (JBR). It has a separate head and tail, then separate middle segments that can be posed. The legs are one piece, but the way they attach to the body segments, you can pose them in many ways. Jon found it a little tricky to build and he thought it required a bit of thought, but had lots of fun doing it.

It was painted by Chris Yaro.

The kit will be sold as a starter set with head and tail and two body segments, the minimum needed for propulsion (of course). Then extra segments will be sold as expansion sets, so you can make it longer. The one pictured below is a super heavy version with six segments!Production looks to be sometime around March.

Khurasan Miniatures has released the Kilo Outpost. The retail price is $39.99

The starter set has ten parapetted wall sections, four heavily-armored bastions (corner sections) with white metal gun turrets, and a gate section including separate door. The Sections plug into each other by small tabs on the bottom that are not visible when the set is assembled. To expand the size of your outpost, additional sets of parapetted walls are available.

Designed by John Bear Ross. The parts of Kilo Outpost that are cream colored resin were cast by JTFM Enterprises. These cream-coloured resin pieces are very dense and you must prime them with enamel primer (autobody primer, etc) before painting them with acrylics as acrylics will not adhere to the resin surface.

I would love to see some other forts similar to the old Airfix gun emplacements.

Micropanzer Russian Heavy Combat Armor

Jason has a picture of the prototype for his Micropanzer Russian Heavy Combat Armor units. These are for 28-32mm play. Looks like there will be a ton of arm options. Love the design. Perfect for say a space hulk type game.

Jason did run into a problem with the flamer arms as both copies did not print correctly. He is using green stuff to fix them right now, so they are not included in the image below.

These guys should be available sometime early next year.

Khurasan Miniatures, TerraForce

Here are some renders of upcoming TerraForce troopers from Khurasan Miniatures known as the Corsair. The TerraForce uses power armour and an array of weapons to fight, and the basic MBS (main-battle soldier) is the Corsair. There will be a variety of poses and weapons options for the Terraforce superheavy infantry. The two corsairs shown here have "burners," and when they resort to this weapon, better stay out of their frontal arc! An interesting figure has appeared on the radar from ACP Games. Not sure what he will be called, but I like what I am seeing. Hopefully we will see it in metal form soon. Other news from ACP Games comes in the form of new resin tanks. Jimbo has been pretty busy remastering some of the larger vehicle sculpts with new designs and integrated bases. Early next year the Makat will be getting a large walker type to boost their ranks.

Here is something really different from Khurasan Miniatures called the Kilo Outpost. It was designed by John Bear Ross. I guess Jon is getting into the terrain business. Pretty slick.

Kilo Outpost will retail for $39.99 USD It was designed by the great John Bear Ross and this was painted by Martin of "Fire Broadside." It looks like Martin did not glue the pieces together -- they interlock and even when not glued you can see that they fit together fairly well.

The Control Battalion figure is mounted on a large plastic base, but figures mounted on coins will look lower in relation to the walls and when standing on the ramparts.

Just got back from Millenniumcon in Round Rock Texas. It isn't the largest convention, but it's a lot of fun. Had a great time talking with Jimbo from ACP Games. He had a sweet setup showcasing his miniatures, a great staff helping and a really nice demo table.

Got a chance to try out the Valkyrie (Beta 2) ruleset and I must say, it might be one of the best 15mm rules sets out there. The only downside to the rules (Unless I am wrong) is that they are only written for the ACP Games miniature line. Meaning it doesn't have the ability to create your own units. Still you can easily use proxies with the currently army lists and have a brilliant game.

What really stood out was how the assault rules worked, objectives, cover and the use of command points. We weren't using all the rules since it was a demo, but for a convention, it was perfect. The rule set gives the player tons of options on what to do. The command points really spice up the game and make the game feel much more interactive. The command points in the demo allowed you to call in artillery strikes, bring in reinforcements, rally troops and bump up your initiative rolls. In the demo the way to gain command points was by controlling any one of 3 objective markers. Each objective was worth 5 command points. Command points are used after each round. I used them mostly to call in artillery strikes (3 command points) on targets I wanted to assault.

If a unit takes a casualty during an artillery strike, they are considered suppressed. A suppressed unit is a much easier to assault. In the game I did find that you don't want to tangle with Valkyries in CC. Even when suppressed, they can sometimes (actually did) kick butt.

The game also allows for pre and post measurement, so you always know your enemies range bands.

Here are some figure comparisons from Darwin Games Rise of the Occulites. All the big tribe figures are quite heavy (not a bad thing) and are cast up really well. There is a great amount of detail on the figures and they simply look amazing. They will of course work well in both 28mm or 15mm settings.

Here is the latest tribe for Darwin-Games Rise of the Occulites called the Ignis Tribe. The figures have been moved up in the release schedule and will be available at the same time as the Nimbus. A very welcomed late October release.

These figures are just so fun, everyone should get at least one tribe.

The Ignis tribes are found living on or close to lava flats – sometimes even within the vicinity of volcanic activity. They use this terrain to separate themselves from other tribes, preferring to keep to themselves. Any incursions into their lands though are dealt with swiftly and harshly. Ignis tribes are covered in a thick, leathery skin, that takes on the appearance of molten rock. Cracks in this surface act as natural vents, allowing the build up of pressure and heat taken in from their surroundings, to be released. As such, these areas glow boldly with reds, yellows and oranges, warning predators and enemies that this tribe is not to be trifled with.

The Skorpion was one of the very first mass-produced ‘Anti-Gravity’ AFVs produced within the Technosphere, however, technically it does not really use Anti-Gravity but rather the lower-tech’ ‘R-grav’: the heavy “skids” which typify this sort of vehicle being one of it prominent features.

DreamForge-Games, KickStarter, Project Eisenkern

DreamForge-Games has launched Project Eisenkern, a KickStarter campaign to produce a line of 32mm sci-fi figures. The first set of miniatures have sort of a Warzone Bauhaus feel to them.

There are going to be 2 troop types produced for this campaign including the Sturmtruppen and the Kriegsmarine, which are medium troop choices for the Eisenkern faction.

The Sturmtruppen (Stormtroopers)are an elite fighting force for the Whermacht (regular army) equipped with composite armor they can withstand withering barges of fire that would wound or kill lesser armored troops. The Sturmtruppen’s main role is to secure and hold key military points and act as the armored fist of the Whermacht, grinding the opposition to dust.

The Kriegsmarine were created when the Imperial navy took to space. A merging of the Navy, Air force and Fallschirmjager, these are elite troops and medium troop choices for the Eisenkern faction. Typically assigned to planetary assault, they drop from low orbit with the use of their drop packs, a device that allows the trooper to fall at terminal velocity towards its target and stop just before impacting the planet’s surface.

Definance Games, Core Forces

Here is some intel on Defiance Games upcoming game.

We divide our sets into two categories - Core Forces and Edge Forces.

Core Forces are those that are associated with the major powers of the Alien War universe. Edge Forces are supplemental sets that add flavor to the universe but don't necessarily warrant a full army.

For example, when we introduce a Core Force like the venerable United States Marine Corps, we will outline the plan for the follow-on sets in that Force over the next weeks and months. So with the USMC you'll have infantry followed closely by power armor (what we call hardsuits), then female Marines, and then heavy weapons. Over time, we will continue to add to those Core Forces with supplemental sets, vehicles, etc. - all in hard plastic. Core Forces will always be treated in this fashion so that you know what's coming and when to flesh out your army.

Edge Forces will represent a unit or small Force that can be done in one or two sets that we really believe should come to life to enhance the Alien War setting. For example, this might be a special operations unit within one of the lesser powers in the game, a "civilian" set, one of the native alien races, or an interesting vehicle that might not fit under the umbrella of a Core Force. Given the dynamic nature of alliances and multi-sided battles within the setting, these Edge sets may be used as auxiliaries with your army or just as small armies in games you play. These sets may never be followed by additional sets for that Force...but wait, that's not necessarily true...

In some cases, there may be a desire on the part of the community to enhance an existing Edge Force with additional sets. We'll always be open to doing this if enough people are behind it. For example, one of our first Edge Force sets are the Valkyries - hardsuit wearing, all-female elite special operations troops of the Nordic Federation. The Nordic Federation "may" become a Core Force over time, but we don't have a specific plan for that at present. We do think the set will be a fun one and add a lot of flavor to the game. If enough of you are interested in expanding the NF into a full Core Force, we can do that.

The division between Core and Edge Forces will give us the ability to launch some really fun "extra" sets while allowing you to have the confidence that a Force you begin to build will be fully realized if it's a Core one. We hope you like this approach to releases!

Here are some pictures of some very cool Mercs by ArtCrime Productions. Currently these are not for sale. They are a little bit bigger than the current line of figures due to the extra armor. Really like the look of these. The Heavy gunner is the biggest of the bunch, but what do you expect when you need to lug around a big weapon.

The figures should be available October 31, retail, for 6 figs perfect for Gruntz, is $8.00. 2 assault rifles, 2 shotguns, 1 antitank laser, 1 squad support machine gun! There might even be a Christmas special with them. Wait to see!

Antenocitis Workshop seems like they are quite busy these days pumping out all sorts of cool looking models. They are currently working on some 15mm vehicles. That said, they created a beauty of a 3D sculpt robot called the American Legion Warrior Mech. The mech will probably be around 80mm to 100mm tall.

They also have a movie of the Mech walking around.

When I saw the movie Antenocitis made for the Mech, it instantly brought back memories of Chrome Hounds. Absolutely loved that game and am very pissed that the online server was taken down. IMO Chrome Hounds was an absolutely amazing multi-player game. The best part about the game was tinkering with builds in the garage. I would spend hours trying to figure out the best build possible.

Blue Stuff, Mold Making

There is cool mold making material called Blue Stuff. You use it to make molds and then press green stuff into it. It is a two part mix and only takes 1 1/2 minutes to harden. The Blue Stuff looks great for making quick molds for conversions like symbols, weapons or whatever. I haven't tried it, but it does look promising. I think it is probably better suited for half molds rather than full molds.

Here are the upcoming Khurasan Miniatures Felid jetbikers. These look sweet! Love the helmets on the 2 body guards and the missile jetbike.

Each pack has the hostage baron's son and his two slightly nervous and frustrated sergeant bodyguards, three Leopard jetbikes, three energy weapon inserts and one missile rack insert, and three small flying bases. The pack is entirely pewter. They should be released in a few days, along with the redo of the Lion. The bike was designed by the mighty John Bear Ross and this set was painted by that winged hussar of the modern age, Chris Yaro. Stay tuned, Felid commanders!

Star Wars 15mm, Micro Machines Stormtroopers

Well I picked up 4 packs of the Star Wars Micro Machines Stormtroopers. While they are a little taller than most of my 15mm figures, I think they will look just fine on the table top. I actually quite like the look of them. I am thinking of using them in some type of Space Hulk corridor type game. These figures are OOP, so usually you have to look on Ebay or Amazon.

Here is a great vehicle by Khurasan Miniatures called the Locust.

Designed by the great John Bear Ross, it is the same size as the Rockjumper pickup and the final drives are actually interchangable.

The model is mostly resin but the 10mm DP pulse gun turret is pewter. Not all of the trucks mount the turret and it is just as often seen with a hatch on the roof, or, for the Secret Police, a steel plate bolted on.

Here are some upcoming models from Fantasy Flight Games Dust Tactics line called the Punisher and Fireball. I kind of like these.

Highlander Studios have really hit it out of the park with their Space Pals lineup. Not only are the miniatures outstanding, but with every purchase made, part of the proceeds will go to the Red Cross. Right now a donation of $3 for each set will be sent to the Red Cross at the beginning of each month. Pretty cool.

The first set of Space Pals is the Bounty hunter, smuggler and Sasquatch. Sometime around October there will be another release Kendo masters and student.
