Soda Pop Miniatures - Super Dungeon Explore Part 2

Soda Pop Miniatures is looking to release a game called Super Dungeon Explore.   The release date isn't set yet, but I have heard that things might be ready in October/November time frame.

The game is based on the 8 bit dungeon crawl computer game.   The game is played on an 18x18 surface. One player takes the heroes, the other the dungeon. The game is scalable so you can have more than 2 players at a time. The dungeon gets a portal (spawn point) for each hero taken. Heroes explore the dungeon, kill monsters, get loot, hearts and potions (not necessarily all at once though) and search for treasure chests.

As the game progresses the power of the heroes grows as they gather loot and kill monsters, but the power of the dungeon increases as it does damage to heroes, going from 8 bit to 16 to 24 ultimately leading to boss battles and the 'final fight'.

24 Hour Comics - October 2-3, 2010

It's that time of the year again, when Matt packs up his art supplies, leaves his wife and home to draw a 24 page comic in 24 hours.Who would do that? How much love for an art do you really need to have to continue this torture? Who the hell knows. Started at 10 am October 2nd, Matt will be @ Dragon's Lair on Burnet next to the Japanese food store. You nerds should know where exactly that is.

Come on by and he'll draw you something. The later you stop by, the more amusing the image.

He'll be tweeting his mental downfall.

Mantic Games, Mantic Journal Issue 2

Mantic Games has released a new issue of the Mantic Journal (Issue 2).

Black Scorpion Miniatures, Duck

I thought this duck was a rather good sculpt from Black Scorpion Miniatures.  Black Scorpion makes some really amazing figures.  I really like the look of their Tombstone and U.S. Marine lines.  The Marines would be perfect for some Sci-Fi scenerios.

15mm Matchbox Vehicles

Matchbox has a vehicle that is just perfect for 15mm Sci-Fi games.  Plan on spending about $1-$2 per vehicle.  An excellent value all around.  It has been produced under many names and comes in many different paint jobs.  If you do a Google search for "Matchbox Armored Response Vehicle" or "Matchbox Armored Police Vehicle" you should be able to find lots of them.  You may even be able to find them at a local toy store that sells Matchbox cars.  The rear top of the vehicle slides backwards to reveal seats and a console.

Spartan Games is coming out with a new game called Firestorm Invasion.  It is going to be 6mm Sci-Fi, but it appears they are also looking at doing it in other scales.  Can you say 15mm....sure you can.

PlasmaBlast Games, Super Heavy Tanks

Just received some pre-production samples of the upcoming Plasma Blast Games 6mm Super Heavy Tanks. These are beautiful sculpts with lots of detail. The tanks add some serious fire support for both the Progenitor and Orbital Combine armies.  The tanks should be available in a month or two.

Each tank is composed of 5 pieces

As you can see, the super heavy tanks are huge compared to the heavy tank (bottom right)

Everyone knows Dream Pod 9 makes Heavy Gears, but you may not know they make some pretty cool tanks.  In Heavy Gear Blitz, tanks have lots of armor, lots of firepower and are tough to take out.

Clever Mojo Games - Ogre Castle

I received a review copy of Ogre Castle last week from David MacKenzie of Clever Mojo Games.  I really like this game.  It has all the elements you would want in a game including suspense, back stabbing, monsters, treasure and knights.  Ogre Castle is a ton of fun pitting players against each other in a winner take all game.

The game is easy to play, with simple mechanics.  The game requires 4 players, 3 of which are knights trying to plunder treasure from the Ogre's Castle and 1 person who plays the big bad Ogre.  Being the Ogre means you get to beat the heck out of the knights and take treasure back.

The base game retails for $25 or you can buy the game with a booster deck for $35.   The booster deck can be used instead of the standard deck or combined with the standard deck, in part or in whole, to vary the game play experience.  For people who prefer to play games using metal figures instead of paper figures, this can easily be done using any 28mm fantasy figure range.  My plan is to use some Reaper miniatures I have, painting them up in the red, blue, yellow and green color schemes.

Game Components include
1 Game Map
1 Accessories Bag
1 Deck of Magic Scroll Cards
1 Ogre Token & 3 Knight Tokens
1 Black Die & 7 Red Dice
12 Armor Chips
12 Colored Gems

Fireside Games, Castle Panic

I got to play a game today called Castle Panic by Fireside Games.  It was their 1 year anniversary and they were celebrating with game demos, cake and a few giveaways.  In the game you try to defend the castle from various monsters (Goblins, Orcs, Ogres and Large Boulders).
Castle Panic is cooperative strategy game for 1 to 6 players.  Players must work together to defend their castle, in the center of the board, from monsters that attack out of the forest, at the edges of the board. Players trade cards, hit and slay monsters, and plan strategies together to keep their castle towers intact. The players either win or lose together, but only the player with the most victory points is declared the Master Slayer.  Players must balance the survival of the group with their own desire to win.
  Castle Panic includes:
  • Gameboard
  • Rulebook
  • 49 Castle Cards
  • 49 Monster Tokens
  • 6 Walls
  • 6 Towers
  • 1 Tar Token
  • 2 Fortify Tokens
  • 5 Order of Play Cards
  • 12 Plastic Stands
  • 1 Die
